For articles on the FP, my comments always show up as gray. I'm assuming that it's because I don't have authorship (like it is here on Oppo), so how do I go about getting "authorship" or whatever the FP term is to not have a grayed-out comment? Because I really want a chance at that GT6 track-design competition.

You have to get followed by Jalopnik. Only the writers can do that. Enter the competition anyways, I'm assuming that they'll look at every entry, even the gray ones.

*realizes he'll probably never get followed by one of the writers* I'm not crying...someone's just cutting onions...across town...super-late at night... But I did enter anyways! In the hope that they look at the grayed out ones as well.

If you keep making good comments, they're usually pretty good about following people for Jalopnik.

Well I only comment on FP articles occasionally. So it's not like it's the end of the world if it never happens.

"Authorship" = the ability to write to a blog. It also gives you a "featured" benefit on comments, but it's main goal is to give you the ability to write on a blog, as you have here. Only physical Jalopnik employees (the staff and interns) and paid contributors (Kligerman and the like) get authorship, while even DasWauto, who has a daily column, does not. That same "featured" benefit in comments is given by an author of the blog "following for" the blog. So, if someone sees you as a consistent quality contributor on the front page, they'll "follow for Jalopnik" you, which will give you that featured ability. It's similar to the old "stars" system from the old "4.0" Jalopnik face, if you remember it.

I do not remember those days, but thank you for the breakdown! I just used "authorship" because that's what I saw it called for Oppo (since you can post to it), and I had no idea what to call having non-grayed comments.

I feel your pain.
I was already commenting freely, but when they rolled out this version of Kinja I got stuck in the grey for a bit. Just make good comments and they'll follow you, eventually.
Pro tip: your comments are less likely to remain greyed if you reply to an existing thread (preferably a fresh, small one). If a followed commenter replies to you, that individual comment will show up.

I just followed you for Oppo. I have no idea if that will work.

I popped online between classes to find this! It's not the same, but it still pulled my comment out of the gray! *happy dance*
